How it works
Final price = original · (1 − discount/100). Savings = original − final.
Complete guide
Sales advertise the headline percentage off, but what really matters is the dollar amount you actually save and the price you pass to the cashier. This calculator gives you both at once so you can compare offers honestly.
Enter the original (pre-sale) price and the discount percentage shown on the tag. The result shows the amount you save and the final price you'll pay.
Watch out for stacked discounts. '40% off, then an extra 20% off' is not 60% off — it's 0.6 × 0.8 = 0.48, or 52% off. Multiplying the discounts (not adding) gives you the true savings.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this include sales tax?
- No. Tax is calculated on the discounted price in most U.S. states. Use the sales tax calculator for the full out-the-door cost.
- How do I find the original price from the sale price?
- Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). A $60 item at 25% off had an original price of $60 / 0.75 = $80.
- What is BOGO actually worth?
- Buy-one-get-one-free is effectively 50% off if you need two items. Buy-one-get-one-50%-off is 25% off the pair.
- Is a bigger discount always a better deal?
- Not if the original price was inflated for the sale. Compare the final price to other retailers' regular prices, not to the sticker.
