Complete guide
Tipping conventions vary widely across countries. In the U.S., 18–20% is standard at sit-down restaurants and is essentially expected because servers earn most of their income from tips. In much of Europe service is included and a small round-up (5–10%) is plenty. In Japan tipping can even be considered rude.
Enter the pre-tax bill, the percentage you want to leave, and how many people are splitting the cost. The calculator returns the tip amount, the new total, and the per-person share.
Quick mental math for U.S. tipping: take 10% of the bill (move the decimal one place left), then double it for 20%. For 18%, take 20% and subtract a tenth of itself.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- Etiquette experts say pre-tax, but most people just tip on the total. The difference is small unless the tax rate is unusually high.
- Do I tip on takeout or delivery?
- Delivery: yes, typically 10–15% or a $3–5 minimum. Takeout: optional, but $1–2 or 10% is appreciated for larger orders.
- How do I handle a bad service experience?
- In the U.S., still leave 10–15% and speak to a manager about the issue. Stiffing the server usually punishes someone who didn't cause the problem.
- What's a fair tip for a large group?
- Many restaurants automatically add an 18–20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. Check the bill before adding more on top.
