How it works
Tax = price · (rate/100). Total = price + tax.
Complete guide
U.S. sales tax is added on top of the listed price at checkout, unlike European VAT which is already included on the shelf. The combined rate (state + county + city) varies from 0% in places like Oregon and Delaware to over 10% in parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama.
Enter the pre-tax price and your local combined sales tax rate. The calculator returns the tax amount and the total you'll actually pay.
If you're shopping online, sales tax depends on the shipping address, not where the seller is based. Most large retailers now collect sales tax in every state thanks to the 2018 Wayfair Supreme Court decision.
Frequently asked questions
- Is sales tax the same everywhere in a state?
- No. Many states add local (county or city) taxes on top of the state rate. The combined rate can vary by several percent within the same state.
- Are groceries taxed?
- It depends on the state. Most states exempt unprepared groceries; some tax them at a reduced rate. Prepared food (restaurants, deli) is almost always taxed.
- How do I back out the pre-tax price?
- Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). A $107 total at 7% tax breaks down to $107 / 1.07 = $100 pre-tax and $7 tax.
- Is sales tax deductible?
- On U.S. federal returns you can choose to deduct state sales tax instead of state income tax if you itemize. Most people take the standard deduction and skip both.
